Leonard Tassava


Leonard Tassava, 85, of E4846 Clover Lane, Ironwood Town-ship, died Wednesday, Dec. 23, 1992 in Ironwood.

Mr. Tassava was born May 31, 1907 in Ironwood Township, son of the late John and Hilma Tassava. He attended Ironwood Township schools.

He owned and operated a dairy farm until his retirement. He served for nine years on the Iron-wood Township Board of Education, was a deputy treasurer of the township, served on the board of review, and was a member of various farm organizations.

Mr. Tassava was a lifelong member of St. John's Lutheran Church, and as a young man, helped with the construction of the church. He was also a member of the Ironwood Township AARP and was an avid hunter and trout fisherman.

On May 30, 1931 he was married to the former Helmi E. Talo. She preceded him in death Aug. 24, 1975. On Oct. 26, 1985 he was married to the former Ellan Pikka, who preceded him in death Nov. 30, 1991.

Also preceding him in death were three brothers, Einard, Arnold and Abel; a sister, Hannah Maki; and a daughter, Nancy Mattson.
Survivors include two sons, Marvin of Ironwood and James of Hancock; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Selma Palojarvi and Mayme Leppanen, both of Iron-wood, Ida Binford of Crawfordsville, Ind. and Mirium Tungate of Seattle, Wash.

Services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church, Airport Road, the Rev. Lauri O. Maki officiating.
Spring burial will be in Sunset Acres Cemetery, Ironwood Town-ship.

Visitaion will be held Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Nyberg-Miller-Paulsen Mortuary, Iron-wood.
Pallbearers will be John Palojarvi, Kaarlo Niemi, Wilbert Niemi, Robert Brace, George Mayer and John Neumann.
